Shedding Antlers of Moose

by Steven
(Kalispell, MT)

When a moose sheds one of his antlers what is the typical time frame for him to shed the other antler? Is it hours, days, weeks? Or is it just kind of up in the air?

Yes...

Any of those really, and sometimes minutes or seconds.

In anticipation of the new growth the underlying connective pedicle tissue will break free of the antler. Gravity or blunt force will break the antler free.

Moose with larger antlers loose their headgear earlier because of sheer weight. That is why we see moose with smaller antlers carry them into late spring.
