Moose Antler Development

Hi, We just returned from Algonquin Park in Ontario, Canada where we saw two moose together. One had nearly a full rack while the other had maybe 6 inch nubs. Is there a reason why one would be so far advanced?

Moose Antler Development

I am sure what you witnessed is just a variation in age. Bull moose start to grow antlers in their second year, although small the first year, each subsequent year the antlers get a little lager. This trend will continue until reaching their prime, then in the years following the antler growth will actually recede from previous years growth.

Moose antler development is entirely dependent upon the age of the moose.

Please visit the Moose Antlers for more information about how the antlers of bull moose develop.

Thanks for the question,

Mark
